Career and Personal Benefits of Training

The world is ever changing and seemingly at a faster pace then ever. This is especially true in the workplace and career market. The knowledge and skills gained in our first round of post-school education, whether it be a diploma or degree, become quickly dated. The challenge for all of us is how to stay equipped not only for our current careers but also for the future.
This is where adopting the mindset of life-long learning becomes vital. Training plays a key role in the life-long learning process. Here are a few ways that training benefits us.
Knowledge and skill development
First off, one obvious benefit is in updating and further developing our knowledge and skill set. This is vital in the fast-paced career market. The skills we had even for just a few years ago can quickly become outdated through developments in technology and workplace practices. Therefore, we need to invest in this life-long learning mindset in order to stay relevant for our current roles.
Career advancement
In addition, our roles change over time as our career grows and develops. That promotion we want to apply for, that increase in responsibilities as our role changes mean that our skills and knowledge also need to match. If we want to change careers and apply for a new job having the right skill set is essential to help us be an attractive candidate. That is often the case as it relates to our level of English. What was suitable for holidays is not suitable for our work role. What was suitable for an occasional email or short conversation, is no longer enough to make presentations, or lead meetings in English. Our holiday experience in another country, does not prepare us to lead an intercultural team, or negotiate with a company from abroad. In all these areas training can meet your needs and help you advance your career and stay competitive.
Resilience, growth and satisfaction
Quite aside from the benefits to your career I am a firm believer that training benefits us personally. This has been my experience as an educator and trainer, and as someone who has participated in training myself. As we face the new challenges of training, what we learn along the way helps us stay motivated and fulfilled not only in our job but also in our personal lives. As a result of training we can become more adaptable, more confident, and better able to cope with the challenges and changes in our workplace. Resulting in less work-based stress. In addition, our satisfaction and fulfilment at work means we are happier and more content in other areas of our life as well. For example, taking our English up to the next level means we no longer experience stress when leading meetings, negotiations or making presentations in English. Training has a real benefit outside of the workplace.
Tailor-made training maximises your benefit
The training that is offered needs to be tailor made to your situation. Generic courses can be helpful but training that is designed to meet your needs means you maximise the benefits especially as it relates to your investment of time, energy and money. Therefore, always try and find a course or program where the trainer listens to what you need and adapts what they offer to suit you.
