Change is a part of life. No-one stays exactly the same throughout their life. Even the most stable of people experience times of change whether by choice or due to external circumstances. You can face change in multiple ways – in your relationships, at your workplace, in your health, in your spirituality, entering a new phase of life, and so the list goes on.
Most of us function in life with a high degree of automation – we make routine decisions and choices without much conscious thought. If this were not the case then we would soon be overwhelmed with every choice, decision, movement, or action.
From Awareness to Change
At times, however, we can become aware of a thought, feeling, emotion or something else that causes us to pause for a moment. Something stirs and grabs our attention. In that moment of awareness, we can choose to give it some attention or let it pass on by. If we choose to pay attention to it, we have the opportunity to reflect intentionally on it. In that situation we may be unsure how to understand it or what to do with this new awareness. Awareness then can be the gateway to change if we seize the moment. This is where coaching is plays a key role. When this moment of awareness occurs within the context of a coaching relationship there is real potential for turning the discovery into an opportunity for growth and change.
Role of Coaching
When awareness and insight are explored within the context of your life you can be empowered to step into the change process. For change to happen your motivation, interests and values are key elements in this process.
The coach is present and supportive in highlighting and working with these in your sessions. By providing an interactive, collaborative process including observations, questions, feedback and exercises we can work together to reach your goals.
A Change Tip
So what is a simple change tip? For change to best happen the changes need to be: Easy, Attractive, Social and Timely (EAST)*. The easier the steps to change the more likely they are to work. The more they lead to an appealing outcome based on values, the more motivated you will be. When the change happens in supportive relationships, and when the timing is suitable then the change is more likely to result in a positive outcome. I find this a help framework as it is easy to remember for both coach and client.
